Normal People Masks

Who am I?

I look in the mirror and I see a perception of myself,

I do not think it is mine.

Am I really me?

Look me in my eyes.

I am here, behind the mask.

Normal People Masks is a multimedia series from the Zebra Collection that aims to give women who live with chronic pain a space to share their stories.

Women's voices are often discounted and misunderstood and women themselves can learn to dismiss their own voices.

Living in pain can be an isolating experience.

People with chronic pain often become their own advocates in a world that is not designed for differently abled bodies.

People with chronic pain navigate the world through a different perspective and face barriers in society and the healthcare system.

Pain impacts the activities a person can participate in, their energy levels, careers, social circles, mental well-being, self-perception, and all aspects of a life worth living.

Jenise Finlay

“There's still a lot of hatred sometimes towards my body, and it feels like a battleground every day where I'm at war with my body. But overall, I'm mostly just really proud of myself now. Because I know how hard my body works. And I love my body because it tries so hard. And I mostly now try to focus on joy, and the things that I can do instead of the things that I can't do.”
